So this month I have been learning about traditional publishing versus self-publishing, or what has been called Third Wave publishing. In the traditional way of publishing, as in the music industry, bands and artists would have to hope for a record deal that would exploit their music. The artist or band could then typically live off an advance from the record company while the album is being produced. However, once the finished product is released, the band or artist would have to hope on selling enough albums to pay back the advance to the record label, on top of any other entities involved in the chain of publishing and distributing. After that, only THEN can the band hope to make a profit on their creation. This Second Wave publishing is the way the big record labels operate, and unfortunately, how many beginning artists and bands think. However, you can take matters into your own hands and create opportunities for yourself.
